5 Smoothie Recipes Kids Will Love

5 Smoothie Recipes Kids Will Love

Smoothies have recently become a popular item in my household, one that I’m glad to accommodate. They are easy and quick to make, nutritious, and make a great healthy alternative to high calorie desserts like ice cream or cookies. My kids are big on getting a dessert after dinner and serving them up a fruit smoothie makes both them and me happy.

Fruit smoothies are their favorite, but I am able to sneak some spinach in when they aren’t looking. What they don’t know won’t hurt them! After much trial and error I have come to realize that the secret to making a really good, creamy smoothie is using frozen fruit. With frozen fruit you can skip the ice, which can water down the flavor a bit, and you can buy packages of prefrozen fruit at the grocery store that can last you much longer than fresh fruit. If you have fresh fruit that is getting close to going bad chop it up, place it in Ziploc bags, and stick it in the freezer to be used in smoothies later. You can even put all the ingredients of a particular smoothie recipe in one bag so that when you are ready to make your next smoothie all you have to do is toss what’s in the bag in the blender, add milk or yogurt, and viola you’ll have your smoothie.

If you are ready to give smoothies a try, or if you want to spice up your routine with new recipes, here are five simple recipes that are kid approved.

Note: I have assumed frozen fruit for these recipes, if using fresh fruit add a cup of ice to the ingredients as well. For all smoothies place ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. If the taste is too tart for your liking, add some honey or low calorie sweetener to taste. Recipes should yield 3 -4 eight ounce smoothies.

31 Meals in 31 Days: Rice Cooker Mac & Cheese

I love macaroni and cheese, but I have never been able to make it where it comes out right. I have tried making baked mac & cheese, stove top mac & cheese, and slow cooker mac & cheese and I just have never been able to get it right. It tasted OK but there was always something missing from the flavor. But that is not a problem anymore! Now I can whip up a batch of delicious, cheesy macaroni and cheese whenever I want to and with very little effort!

And it is all thanks to this recipe I found on weelicious, where the secret ingredient is… a rice cooker! Yep, it turns out that cooking macaroni and cheese in a rice cooker works perfectly. And the flavor is just right, in fact it tastes baked! And from start to finish it only takes 30 minutes to prepare. I cannot say enough good things about the way this mac and cheese turned out. I will never make it from a box again!

I did make a few tweaks to her recipe, and it was sooooooo delicious! Enjoy!

31 Meals in 31 Days: Slow Cooker Country Style Ribs

We have always loved country style ribs cooked in the crock pot with tangy barbecue sauce. Using this recipe I made my own barbecue sauce instead of using some from a bottle. It turned out great! The apple cider vinegar gave it just the right amount of tang.Slow Cooker Country Style RibsYou may be tempted to skip browning the ribs first and just put them straight into the crock pot, especially if you are throwing this together before work in the morning, but don’t do it! Browning the ribs before you put them in the crock pot ensures that the sauce won’t be runny and greasy. Trust me, I made a boston butt that didn’t make it on here to share with you guys because I skipped the browning step and the barbecue sauce turned out nasty. Taking a few minutes to brown the meat first is so worth it!

Follow the recipe and this turns out so good! Enjoy!

31 Meals In 31 Days: Tuna & Pasta Cheddar Melt

For this recipe I used a little white lie to get my kids to try it: I told them the pasta had chicken in it. I knew if I told them it was tuna they would immediately turn their noses up so I employed a little trick and it worked, they cleaned their plates and my daughter asked if she could take leftovers for her lunch the next day! When dinner was over I told them the truth, that they had just eaten tuna and LOVED it, and they had to grudgingly admit that they do actually like tuna after all.

Tuna & Pasta Cheddar Melt

This is the perfect recipe for a busy weeknight and makes great leftovers for school or work lunch the next day. And of course, you can actually make it with chicken instead of tuna!
