Dishwashers are good for more than just washing dishes, they are also useful for cleaning items found throughout your home. Here are 7 things you can wash in your dishwasher besides dishes.
Baseball hats can really rack up the dirt, especially when worn by an active ball player, but washing them in the washing machine can leave them bent out of shape. The next time you find yourself faced with a dirty cap, try washing it in the dishwasher instead. Wash it on the top rack and by itself, don’t wash it with dishes as food particles could get stuck in the fabric.
Flip Flops looking particularly filthy after a fun day at the beach? No problem, toss them in the dishwasher and they will come out looking good as new. Be sure to hook them to the tines on the top rack to prevent them from flopping around in the dishwasher.
Light Fixture Covers
Light fixture covers can become pretty grimy over time, to give them a new lease on life wash them in the top rack of your dishwasher. Only glass or plastic covers should be washed in the dishwasher, avoid washing antique fixture covers or ones that are painted.
Toothbrushes should be cleaned regularly, and should be sanitized after you have been sick. An easy way to do this is to toss your toothbrush into the dishwasher with your next load of dishes. They fit well in the utensil holder and the dishwasher will get them cleaned and sanitized. Put your plastic or ceramic toothbrush holders on the top rack for a quick clean as well. You can also wash your plastic hairbrushes (remove the hair first) and makeup brushes while you are at it. Also feel free to toss in plastic mouth guards and retainers, as they can be sanitized in the dishwasher too.
This works especially well for keeping plastic bath toys sanitized. Simply wash plastic toys on the top rack of your dishwasher and they will be left clean and germ free. If you are worried about smaller toys being tossed around, wash them in a mesh bag. This is also a good method for keeping your dog’s plastic chew toys clean.
Your little one spilt red juice all over your refrigerator and didn’t bother to tell you? Don’t worry, you don’t need to spend an hour hand washing the caked on goo off, just put the shelves in the dishwasher and let it do the washing for you. Your shelves will come out sparkly clean and sanitized. If your refrigerator drawers will fit in your dishwasher, then go ahead and pop them in as well.
It sounds crazy, but it works. Rinse hubcaps off first, then wash them on the top rack of your dishwasher using the pots and pans setting for the ultimate scrub. Many people use a cup of white vinegar instead of dishwashing detergent when washing their hubcaps, but it is really up to you. One thing is for sure, your hubcaps will sparkle.
