For day 13 I needed another quick meal since my daughter has gymnastics that evening. My family really likes sloppy joes, but I didn’t have a can of manwich handy so I thought this is as good a time as any to ditch the canned stuff and learn how to make my own. And I am so glad I did! It couldn’t be easier and tastes sooooo much better than what we have been eating out of a can. And this simple recipe contains ingredients that are pretty much pantry staples, which keeps sloppy joes as easy and simple as they are supposed to be.
1 lb ground beef
1/4 cup chopped onion
1 teaspoon garlic powder
2 teaspoons yellow mustard
1 1/2 cups ketchup
2 tablespoons brown sugar
Salt and pepper to taste
Brown hamburger meat and onion in skillet, drain well, and return to skillet. Stir in all remaining ingredients, reduce heat and simmer for around 30 minutes.
This also works well in the crock pot, which is how I cooked it. After you cook the meat and onions, mix all ingredients together in crock pot and cook on low for 3 hours.
Optional add-ins: If your family likes green bell peppers, then you can add some in when you cook the meat and onions. You can also cut the ketchup down to 3/4 cup and add in 3/4 cup barbecue sauce for a tangier flavor.
